Travel diary from the vault - Thailand - entry three

Some day in late July 2007

Im still not sure what day or time it is yet but I know I've been here a while now.  Long enough to feel a part of the Tong Nai Pan community. And it's an interesting little community. So who are the people in my neighbourhood?

M - The only thai I know that speaks with an english accent.  We can lie in the hammocks all day and tell stories for hours on end and then when we're bored of the hammocks we'll move to the beach.  We can talk a lot.

X - Beautiful X.  Our burmese fire dancer god.  Hes had the roughest life of anyone I have ever met and come out the other end speaking 3 languages and running fire poi lessons.  He is an inspiration.

I - Discreetly terrorises the beach.  Get on his bad side and you could find yourself on the missing persons list for KP island.  Behind all the bullshit though there is a sweet lovely person who is hillariously funny.

I am seriously in love with this beach and the people from this beach.  I find myself never to be alone here.

My day usually starts around 10, I think.  Whenever my bungalow gets so hot I cant sleep in it anymore is when I get up.  I walk down to the beach and have a morning swim, Ill then go over and meet K for breakfast, a ritual thats been in effect since I got here.  K works in a bar, hes having issues with the amount of woman throwing themselves at him.  He is fiercley buddhist and this lifestyle is strange for him.  We gossip about whatever happened last night and he fills me in on the new slappers in town.  K will then go back to bed and Ill walk down the beach a little more.

I never usually get far down the beach until someone yells for me.  Its usually x and bai from chai bar.  I spend a lot of time with these guys.  We lie around on the mattresses on the beach and shoot the shit.  X and bai are from Burma.  There are a lot of burmese on this beach.  X has had it extremely rough, he never went to school, cant read or write and was put to work by age 8.  At 13 he was snuck over the Burmese border and hes been here ever since, 12 years.  He's worked some horrific jobs for a pitiful pay.  His life makes me feel guilty for the things I take for granted.

I hang here for a few more hours talking more and then its time to eat again.  We go to pingin to get Buri, another burmese friend and then go to mamas kitchen a really dodgy looking restaurant on the side of the road.  We'll usually hang out on the main road for a while cos this is action central at Tong Nai Pan beach, sit at mamas kitchen long enough and everyone from the village will drive past you on their bikes, do a u turn and come back and see what you're up to.

Me, X and bai will then go to Bamboo and M, Met and dom will show up and it will be time to go to football in Thong Sala.  KP island is in the final stages of a knock out comp for indoor football of which Tong Nai Pan B team is in the final 4.  Its been a gruelling 2 weeks for the boys plaing 2 games a day.  I myself cant wait for it to be over as the games start at 4pm and we dont get home until well after 10pm.  Theres a lot of waiting around to be done and it bores the fk out of me.

Depending what night it is, we party.  Tuesdays is fire show at chai with X, Thursdays is trance night at funky buddha, Fridays is hideaway over at next beach and Saturdays is either half moon, full moon, black moon or chiva moon and sundays are at central bar with K.

Strangley enough I never am hungover but theres always a few stories to tell.

Its been nearly a month on this beach and I need to do a visa run to Burma this week.  Time flies when you do nothing and I feel a part of this beach.  Today the weather is crap and the water is a deep dark green.  Im not sure what time it is but I think Im going to go back to my hammock. Bye xx
